Compound Nouns: Types of Compound Nouns


Definition:

When two or more than two words are combined together to form a new noun is known as ‘Compound Noun’.

Examples of Compound Nouns:

Open Compounds

When a compound noun is created with the combination of modifying adjective with a noun to create a new noun in known as Open Compound Nouns.

These types of nouns always have space between them.


Examples of Open Compound Nouns:

·         High School

·         Roller Coaster

·         First Aid

 

If the merging adverb ends with ly, the compound noun will always be two separated words.

Example:

·         Horribly Fast

·         Newly designed

 


Closed Compounds

Closed compounds are the words which look like a single word. These are also made up with two words. Few examples are.

Hyphenated Compound Nouns are the compound nouns which are created using hyphen among them.
