What is a noun | define what is noun



Definition

In simple words, the name of a place, person or thing is called a noun.

In other words, a noun is a word that functions as a name of an object or objects like living creatures, places, ideas, actions or qualities.

Nouns can be a subject, object (direct or indirect), subject complement, object complement, or adjective.

Examples of noun as a person

  • Muhammad Ali
  • a boy
  • a doctor

Examples of noun as a place

  • a hospital
  • a mosque
  • New York City

Examples of noun as a thing

Although, the names of the things are nouns. However, in some cases they are intangible things like ideas, actions, or qualities.

  • pencil (tangible)
  • celebration (intangible, action)
  • color (intangible, quality)
  • philosophy (intangible, idea)
